Here's hoping 2018 is off to a spacious and joyful start for you. I have a reflection and planning process for the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. 2018 focus areas include: people, places, movement, creativity and career. Self-compassion and compassion for others are lenses through which I plan to focus on these areas and I’m excited by what emerges when working from this place.
The new year is a natural time for us to focus on our careers and where we’d like to make progress. It’s a time when many organizations have fresh budgets and it can be tempting to think the timing is right to ask for more money or a promotion. A few months back, I wrote a blog post about the financial mood of an organization and getting a firm pulse on it before asking for more money. There is also a need to reflect on how much the organization values our work and knows about our contributions.
On one occasion in my career, I thought it was time to negotiate a promotion due to taking on significantly more responsibility. However, after sharing my potential approaches with a trusted friend, the advice came back loud and clear: it was not the right time. More setting of the stage and demonstrating value was needed. This advice was 100% accurate and helped me craft a better path and the patience to go down it more purposefully.
I encourage you to share your negotiation plans with a trusted friend to get an outside opinion on your approach and determine if the timing is right for making your request.
